The San Marcos police Department, in collaboration with the Texas Rangers Division of the Texas Department of Public Safety and the San Marcos Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division, is actively investigating the recent officer-involved shooting that occurred on the evening of Thursday, April 11 at the intersection of East Hopkins and Thorpe Lane. It is with regret that the San Marcos Police Department confirms the identity of the individual who tragically lost his life in the encounter with a San Marcos Police officer. The deceased has been identified as 22-year-old Malachi Williams, and his next of kin have been informed.
The Sequence of Events Unfolds
The sequence of events unfolded on Thursday, April 11, 2024, around 9:30 p.m., when the San Marcos Police responded to a distress call from two men who reported being followed while walking near East Hopkins and Cheatham Street. The individuals conveyed that the suspect had trailed them from a convenience store on Cheatham Street into a nearby neighborhood, brandishing two large knives and making threats. The suspect, described as a shorter black male in his 20s, wearing a yellow shirt and blue pants, departed the scene when the individuals being followed contacted emergency services.
Subsequently, officers in the vicinity located a man matching the suspect’s description around 10:33 p.m., after he had returned to the convenience store on Cheatham Street. The suspect and the officer then exited the store, following which the suspect fled across Hopkins Street and Thorpe Lane towards an occupied business.

Unsuccessful Taser Deployment
According to preliminary investigations, officers made unsuccessful attempts to halt the suspect’s advance by deploying a Taser. The suspect, armed with a knife and in close proximity to others, continued running towards the occupied business and was subsequently shot by the San Marcos Police. Immediate medical aid was provided on-site, and the suspect was transported to Seton Hays Hospital in Kyle, where he was pronounced deceased. No other injuries were reported as a result of this incident. An autopsy will be performed by the Travis County Medical Examiner.
