Arrests Made in Connection with Undocumented Migrants at Stash House
In a recent development, two individuals have been apprehended by New Mexico State police officers for their involvement in hiding undocumented migrants at a stash house in Las Cruces. The arrests came after an NMSP officer conducted a routine traffic stop on Interstate 10, west of Las Cruces, on Friday, March 12.

Suspicious Behaviour Leads to Discovery
During the traffic stop, the occupants of the vehicle exhibited nervous behaviour and provided inconsistent statements, prompting the State Police officials to delve deeper into the situation. The driver, later identified as Albert Torres, 40, was asked to step out of the vehicle due to not having a valid driver’s license. It was during this interaction that drug paraphernalia fell from Torres’ lap, leading to his detainment.
Incident Unfolds Further
The situation escalated when a female passenger, identified as Victoria Cabrales, 37, began reaching under her seat. Upon being asked to exit the vehicle, a search of Torres revealed suspected methamphetamine in his possession. Additionally, it was discovered that Torres was a convicted felon. Meanwhile, Cabrales attempted to retrieve her phone from the vehicle, only for an officer to spot a stolen firearm between the center console and the passenger seat, resulting in her arrest.
Discovery of Stash House
The plot thickened when Torres and Cabrales admitted to carrying food to a residence in Las Cruces, where undocumented individuals were being harboured. Describing the location as a stash house, the duo also hinted at the presence of more firearms at the residence. Subsequent search warrants were issued for both the vehicle and the residence, leading to the discovery of two firearms, additional methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle, as well as 16 undocumented migrants locked in a room at the residence, devoid of basic necessities like food, water, and communication devices.
Legal Ramifications
As a result of their actions, both Torres and Cabrales were taken into custody and transported to the Dona Ana County Detention Center. They are currently facing charges that include receiving stolen property, possession of a controlled substance, attempt to commit a felony, and receipt, transportation, or possession of a firearm. The U.S. Border Patrol was called in to handle the custody of the undocumented migrants found at the stash house, ensuring their safety and well-being.
