Allegations of Brutality

A relative of Haramkar, who was present at the police station during the incident, claimed that the youth was subjected to brutal assault by the policemen. It is alleged that the officers inserted a stick in his private parts, causing unimaginable pain and suffering to the young man.

The arrested policemen, identified as police sub-inspector Rajesh Jaware and constable Chandraprakash Solanke, are now facing charges of murder. Two other police constables who were allegedly involved in the custodial death have also been booked in connection with the case.

Transfer of Investigation

Following the arrests, the investigation of the case has been transferred to the state Crime Investigation Department (CID). Deputy Superintendent of Police Anmol Mittal (Akot Division) confirmed the developments, stating that the case has been handed over to the CID for further probing.

A Tragic Series of Events

Haramkar, who had a history of being booked in theft cases, was picked up by the four policemen on January 15 for interrogation. The interrogation reportedly turned violent, with the young man being assaulted with a belt by the officers. The situation escalated, leading to severe injuries and ultimately Haramkar’s tragic death.

Family’s Ordeal

The deceased’s uncle, Sukhdev, recounted the harrowing events that unfolded on the fateful night. He described how the policemen conducted a search of their home, beat him up, and took him to the police station. Sukhdev witnessed the brutal assault on his nephew, who pleaded for help in vain.

After losing consciousness, Haramkar was taken to a hospital where he was denied admission. He was then transferred to another hospital where he tragically succumbed to his injuries during treatment on January 17. The family was not even allowed to take his body back to their village for final rites.

Seeking Justice

The family’s fear of the policemen initially prevented them from lodging a complaint. However, an anonymous letter sent to the police department brought the incident to light. An internal probe revealed the involvement of the four officers in causing Haramkar’s death, leading to the suspension of Jaware and Solanke on April 10.

After convincing Sukhdev to come forward with his statement, a case of murder was registered late on Tuesday. While Jaware and Solanke have been arrested, the search for the other two involved policemen continues.

Conclusion

The tragic custodial death of Govardhan Ganesh Haramkar has shocked the community and raised questions about police brutality and accountability. As the investigation unfolds, the hope for justice for the young man and his grieving family remains at the forefront..
