Identity of Woman Found dead in 1985 Finally Revealed
In a recent development, the identity of a woman whose remains were discovered nearly four decades ago in Smith County has finally been released. The remains were found about 75 feet from I-20 near Hwy 69 eastbound while TxDOT crews were mowing along the highway on Oct. 1, 1985. The discovery was made when the remains were identified as those of a woman based on clothing found near her. The Lindale police and the Smith County Sheriff’s Office were contacted, and the remains were sent to the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences for further investigation.

Long Search for Answers
It was believed that the woman was white or Hispanic, and around 25 years old. Her body had been deteriorating near the roadway for a year or more. Despite multiple leads over the past four decades, authorities were unable to identify the woman. In 2021, the sheriff’s office collaborated with the DNA Doe Project to seek funding for identifying the remains. In November of 2023, a breakthrough was made when a possible lead for the identity of the woman was identified.
Uncovering the Truth
DNA was gathered from potential family members in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, leading to the revelation that the woman had been married in January of 1984 and had a child in July of the same year. Following the examination of DNA evidence at UNT Fort Worth, the victim was identified as Sindy Gina Crow, born on Sept. 12, 1957. She was married to Dwight P. Crow, with whom she had a daughter in 1984. Her last known address was in Arlington.
Emotional Closure
David Turner, the original investigator on the case, expressed his feelings at a press conference. He mentioned that the case had always been a challenge due to the lack of a missing person report. Turner had been determined to identify the woman before his retirement, and the news brought a sense of closure after 38 years of searching. The DNA Doe Project also offered their condolences to Sindy’s family and loved ones, acknowledging the bittersweet resolution.
