Albuquerque Citizens Express Mixed Feelings in City Survey

In a recent annual survey conducted by the City of Albuquerque, 400 participants shared their thoughts and concerns about the challenges facing their city. The results revealed a mixture of responses, with 63% of respondents expressing concern about the current direction of Albuquerque.

Crime and Safety at the Forefront of Citizens’ Minds

One of the major points of contention in the survey was crime, with 56% of respondents dissatisfied with the Albuquerque police Department’s handling of violent crimes and 60% unhappy with their approach to property crimes. Additionally, over 80% of participants identified speeding and reckless driving as contributing factors to their feelings of insecurity.

Despite these concerns, 69% of respondents reported feeling safe in their neighborhoods. However, the issue of homelessness was highlighted as a pressing concern, with panhandling and limited access to public spaces identified as top ways the problem affects the community.

Initiatives and Efforts to Address Community Concerns

The city has introduced various initiatives to tackle homelessness and the housing shortage, with the Gateway Center being a key component of the plan. However, the center has yet to become fully operational, leading some residents to question the effectiveness of the city’s efforts.

In addition to crime and homelessness, the survey also shed light on other community concerns such as the cost of living and the state of road repairs. Respondents favored measures like increased street lighting and community-driven crime reporting to enhance their sense of security.

City’s Response to Survey Findings

In response to the survey results, the city issued a statement acknowledging the challenges facing Albuquerque communities. Chief Administrative Officer Samantha Sengel stated, “These responses reaffirm what we know: there are real challenges facing our communities. Our priorities align with what families in Albuquerque want, and we are actively working to address the issues impacting people every day. Continuing to invest in public safety, neighborhood improvements, and programs that strengthen our economy will help us move towards a stronger city.”
