What happened?

Court documents reveal that the incident unfolded when Austin police Department officers observed a car engaged in suspicious activities in a parking lot downtown. Upon attempting a traffic stop due to a faulty headlight, the driver, later identified as Thompson, evaded the officers and sped off eastbound on East Seventh Street. Ignoring red lights along the way, Thompson’s reckless driving led to the fatal collision at East Seventh and Red River streets, claiming the lives of Dunham and Shelton.

Following the hit-and-run, Thompson was involved in another crash on Wolfe Lane in Del Valle. Responding deputies from the Travis County Sheriff’s Office and the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office encountered a noncompliant and intoxicated Thompson at the scene. Despite his claims of innocence and his mother’s supposed involvement, Thompson’s erratic behaviour, including physical resistance against authorities, led to his arrest for DWI.

The aftermath of the incident revealed unsettling findings in Thompson’s car, including a bottle of tequila and a loaded gun. Court documents also indicated his potential influence of methamphetamine and/or crack cocaine, in addition to alcohol. Thompson’s confrontational behaviour towards law enforcement further exacerbated the already tragic situation, painting a disturbing portrait of the events that transpired on that fateful night.
