Newly released court documents provide chilling new details about the investigation into the disappearance of two Kansas women, 27-year-old Veronica Butler and 39-year-old Jilian Kelley, who vanished in late March while in the Oklahoma Panhandle.

The search for Butler and Kelley began on March 30 after their vehicle was found abandoned near Highway 95 and Road L south of Elkhart, Kansas. The two women were on their way to Texas County in Oklahoma to pick up Butler’s children for a court-ordered visitation. The case quickly garnered national attention and led to the arrests of four individuals: 43-year-old Tad Cullum, 54-year-old Tifany Adams, 50-year-old Cole Twombly, and 44-year-old Cora Twombly.
Tragically, the investigation took a grim turn when two bodies were discovered in rural Texas County. The bodies were later identified as Butler and Kelley and were taken to the Oklahoma Medical Examiner’s Office for further examination to determine the cause of death.
Court documents reveal a disturbing sequence of events leading up to the disappearance of the two women. Adams, the paternal grandmother of Butler’s children, allegedly conducted searches related to taser pain levels, gun shops, and methods to remove someone from a house. The suspects were also identified as part of an anti-government group with religious ties.
The Texas County Sheriff’s Office enlisted the help of the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation to assist in the case. Investigators learned that Butler was embroiled in a custody battle for her children with Adams and had enlisted Kelley’s help on the day of their disappearance. The women were last seen at an intersection in Texas County, where their abandoned vehicle was discovered.

Evidence of foul play was uncovered at the scene, including blood and a broken hammer near the vehicle. Butler’s glasses and Kelley’s purse, containing a pistol magazine, were also found. However, a firearm was not located.
Adams claimed that she was at home at the time of the disappearance and had picked up her grandchildren before noon. However, further investigation revealed suspicious activities on her phone, including searches for weapons and methods of coercion.
The court documents shed light on a contentious custody battle between Butler and Adams, with motions filed for extended visitation just days before the disappearance. Adams reportedly refused to comply with court orders regarding the children’s custody, leading to confrontations with law enforcement.
A search of Adams’ phone revealed purchases of stun guns and prepaid cellphones, which were traced to locations near where Butler’s car was found. The phones were tracked to the Twomblys’ residence and a nearby dam, where evidence of recent digging was discovered.
An informant linked Adams, Cullum, and the Twomblys to the murders of Butler and Kelley, describing them as members of an anti-government group known as “God’s Misfits.” The group allegedly held regular meetings and planned the women’s deaths as part of a mission.
