The Leonardtown Volunteer Fire Department is deeply saddened to announce the passing of their esteemed past member, John A. Candela. Known affectionately as Jack, he dedicated over seventeen years of his life to serving the community as an active member of the department. Throughout his tenure, Jack held the position of Treasurer for several years and was a familiar face at the annual carnival, where he tirelessly ran the bingo stand.
A Dedicated Servant to the Community
Jack’s commitment to the fire department extended beyond his role as a line officer; his unwavering dedication to the community meant he was always available to respond to emergency calls. His presence and service will be sorely missed by his colleagues and the community at large. The members of the Leonardtown Volunteer Fire Department extend their heartfelt sympathies to Jack’s family during this difficult time and hope that he may rest in peace.

John Alfonso Candela, 89, of California, Maryland, passed away on April 10, 2024, at George Washington Hospital in Washington, DC, surrounded by his loved ones. Born on November 27, 1934, in Brooklyn, NY, Jack moved to St. Mary’s County in 1944 with his mother and sisters. He credited much of his work ethic to his time spent at the Yates Family farm in Compton, MD during his youth.
A Legacy of Service and Dedication
After graduating from St. Mary’s Academy in Leonardtown in 1952, Jack embarked on a successful banking career that spanned over five decades. Starting as a bank teller, he worked his way up to become the CEO and Chairman of the Board of First National Bank of St. Mary’s. Jack retired after 53 years of dedicated service to the banking industry.
A Devoted Family Man and Community Leader
On April 21, 1956, Jack married his beloved wife, Mary Ada Burch, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Leonardtown. Together, they shared almost 69 years of marriage. Jack’s commitment to the Southern Maryland community extended beyond his professional life; he was a lifetime member of the Leonardtown Lions Club, a past member of the Leonardtown Volunteer Fire Department, and served in the Army National Guard for 11 years.
Cherished Memories and Legacy
Jack had a wide range of hobbies, including tennis, boating, and framing his wife’s paintings. However, his greatest joy came from spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, dedication, and love for his family and friends.
A Final Farewell
Jack is survived by his wife, Mary Ada, his two daughters, Marylee Candela Kreamer and Leigh Ann Candela Keller, his grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends on April 16, 2024, at Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A., with a Mass of Catholic Burial to follow on April 17, 2024, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Mary’s Knight Fund at St. Mary’s Ryken High School. The Candela family expresses their gratitude to all who have shared in Jack’s life and joined them in celebrating a life well lived. May he rest in peace..
