The small village of Qasim Jokhio in district Thatta is reeling from a devastating tragedy that struck on the evening of Eid UL Fitr. A truck carrying around 60 pilgrims on their way to the shrine of Shah Noorani, a revered Sufi saint, met with a horrific road accident near Hub town in Balochistan. The consequences were dire as 18 villagers lost their lives in the calamity.

A Community in Grief
The news of the accident turned the festive atmosphere of Eid into mourning for the residents of Qasim Jokhio. Among the 18 victims, 13 belonged to a single family who worked in brick kilns and stone crushing plants near the Thatta cement factory. The loss of lives has not only shattered families but also brought the economic activities of the village to a standstill.
During a visit to the village, it was evident that the villagers were primarily laborers who worked in various factories and industries to support their households. Many of them expressed their struggles in finding stable employment due to lack of education and opportunities in the area. The condition of the road leading to the village was described as poor, adding to the challenges faced by the villagers.
A Heartbreaking Scene
The aftermath of the accident was marked by scenes of extreme grief as the bodies of the victims were brought back to the village for burial. Families, especially women and children, were in a state of shock and disbelief as they mourned the loss of their loved ones. The tragic incident left an elderly father, Noor Ahmed Jokhio, paralyzed and dependent on the mercy of others.
The driver of the ill-fated truck, who jumped out to save his life, sustained injuries in the accident. Local authorities revealed that the primary cause of the crash was attributed to over speeding and reckless driving. As the village copes with the trauma, 10 injured individuals are still receiving treatment at the trauma center.

Calls for Support and Action
In the wake of the tragedy, political figures such as Haleem Adil Sheikh, Sassui Palijo, and former MNA Babu Ghulam Hussain visited the village to express their sympathies. They emphasized the need for government intervention to provide relief to the affected families. Sheikh warned of launching a movement against the Sindh and Balochistan governments if adequate support was not extended to the victims’ relatives.
The villagers, along with local lawmakers and social organizations, urged for financial assistance and job opportunities to bring stability to the community. The tragic incident has highlighted the need for improved road infrastructure and safety measures to prevent similar accidents in the future.
