Four individuals have been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting death of Mario Morales-Moreno, a Long Beach father and Army veteran. The suspects, identified as Taylor Byron Woods, Semaj Lamar O’Brien, Jordan Omarion Stokes, and Tyrell DeShawn Louden Jr., were charged with the murder of Morales-Moreno and the attempted murder of four others in Long Beach.

The tragic incident occurred on April 4, when Morales-Moreno was doing yard work outside his home on the corner of 61st Street and Atlantic Avenue. A stray bullet struck and killed him, leaving his family and community devastated. police arrived at the scene to find Morales-Moreno with a gunshot wound to his upper body and another man with a gunshot to the leg. Despite efforts to save him, Morales-Moreno was pronounced dead at the scene.

Shirin Senegal, who witnessed the shooting from her office across the street, described the harrowing experience of hearing the gunshots and seeing Morales-Moreno lying on the ground. The community came together to honour Morales-Moreno at a vigil, remembering him as a beloved father, Army veteran, and a man who touched the lives of everyone around him.

Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson expressed his condolences to Morales-Moreno’s family and condemned the senseless violence that took his life. The authorities believe the shooting was gang-related, although Morales-Moreno was likely not the intended target. The suspects, charged with murder, attempted murder, and conspiracy to commit a crime, are being held on $8 million bail.

District Attorney George Gascón emphasized the need for justice in the case, stating that the defendants must be held accountable for their alleged actions. If convicted, the suspects could face life in prison. An arraignment hearing is scheduled for April 25, where further details of the case will be revealed.
