Detectives wasted no time in tracing the suspects back to a car registered to Eleanar Attard. Just two days after the theft, officers swiftly arrested Attard and her husband, Nicholas Panayiotou, at their home in Broxbourne. However, a deeper investigation revealed that the theft was merely a small part of a larger conspiracy to import and steal a significant amount of cannabis.

Wider Conspiracy Uncovered

A WhatsApp group chat found on Panayiotou’s phone contained detailed plans to smuggle 58kgs of cannabis into the UK from the USA. The group also plotted to steal the cannabis from the women recruited to import it by posing as customs officers and seizing the suitcases and passports upon their arrival in the UK.

Arrests and Convictions

Three other individuals connected to the drug importation conspiracy were identified and arrested by police. Constantinos Zavros and Luke Wileman were charged with various conspiracy offences, while Koby Haik was arrested after firing shots at police officers during his apprehension. All three were subsequently convicted and sentenced for their roles in the criminal enterprise.

Sentences Handed Down

Zavros, Haik, and Panayiotou received prison sentences ranging from four to seven years for their involvement in the drug importation, supply, and theft conspiracy. Eleanar Attard, who was charged with the theft of suitcases and passports, received a suspended prison sentence and was ordered to complete a Rehabilitation Activity Requirement and unpaid work.
