CROWN POINT — The Lake County Coroner’s Office has identified the passenger killed in a tragic crash on Interstate 94 as Ty Freimuth, a 39-year-old man from Niles, Michigan. The fatal incident occurred last week when a semitrailer driver failed to slow for traffic and collided with a Kia Sorento SUV, which Freimuth and his family were traveling in. The family was returning from a spring break trip to Wisconsin Dells when the crash occurred around 1:30 p.m. on Thursday along eastbound I-94 at the Columbia Avenue overpass between Calumet Avenue and Indianapolis Boulevard in Hammond.

According to a gofundme fundraiser set up for the family, the preliminary investigation by Indiana State police revealed that a semi was slowing in traffic in the second lane from the left. The Kia Sorento SUV, either slowing or stopped behind the semi, was rear-ended by another semi at a high rate of speed. This initial impact pushed the Kia underneath the trailer of the front semi, and a third semi was also rear-ended as a result of the crash.

Tragically, Freimuth succumbed to blunt force injuries sustained from the crash, which has been ruled an accident by the coroner’s office. The driver of the Kia and a child passenger were both taken to the hospital for treatment of potentially life-threatening injuries. The driver of the truck involved in the crash has not yet been identified, and it is uncertain whether they will face charges in connection to the fatal incident.

The gofundme account set up for the family states that a woman and a 2-year-old child are currently hospitalized in Chicago, facing a long road to recovery while mourning the loss of Ty. A firefighter who participated in the rescue reportedly mentioned that it took an hour and four saw blades to extricate the child from the wreckage.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that in 2021, four occupants were involved in crashes with farm equipment in Indiana, resulting in two deaths. The fundraising efforts aim to alleviate financial stress on the family as they navigate the physical and emotional challenges of recovery.

The gofundme page has raised $35,572 as of Wednesday afternoon, with an outpouring of support from the community. The fundraiser seeks to provide some relief to the family during this difficult time, offering a way for people to contribute and show their solidarity.

As investigations into the crash continue, the community mourns the loss of Ty Freimuth and rallies around his family in their time of need. The devastating impact of the incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of distracted driving and the importance of road safety for all motorists.

The Times has reached out to Indiana State Police for the crash report, and further updates on the case are expected as more information becomes available. The community stands together in support of the Freimuth family as they navigate the aftermath of this tragic event..
