Prosecutors Reopen Vehicular Homicide Case
In a recent development, prosecutors have reopened a 2022 vehicular homicide case against a Ridgefield man accused of driving recklessly, resulting in the death of his 17-year-old passenger. Ethan A. Clonts, 19, appeared in Clark County Superior Court where his bail was set at $10,000.

New Probable Cause Affidavit Challenged
Court records indicate that a defense attorney has challenged the sufficiency of the new probable cause affidavit filed in the case. A review hearing has been scheduled to address this challenge. Investigators had previously suspected Clonts of driving under the influence, and he had appeared in court the day after the tragic crash.
Tragic Details of the Incident
On the night of the incident, Washington State Patrol troopers responded to a crash on I-205 north near the 134th Street exit. They found 17-year-old Oscar Escoto-Sanchez dead in the passenger’s seat of the vehicle. Clonts, who was standing outside the Toyota Camry, claimed that he lost control of the car while attempting to make a lane change.
Reckless Driving Allegations
According to investigators, Clonts was tailgating a vehicle in the right lane before speeding past at 75 mph in a 60 mph zone. As he approached the 134th Street Exit, he was allegedly travelling at close to 90 mph in the right lane. Attempting to maneuver between two cars while speeding, Clonts struck the rear of a car in the right lane before losing control of his vehicle.
High-Speed Impact
The Toyota Camry began to swerve back and forth before ultimately crashing through a guardrail and striking a bridge post. Data from the car indicated that Clonts was travelling at 105 mph with 100 percent throttle when he lost control. The car’s stability control and anti-lock braking system activated before the impact with the guardrail at approximately 90 mph.

Medical Evaluation and Treatment
Following the crash, Clonts was placed on a backboard and taken to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center in Vancouver for evaluation and treatment of his injuries.
