Chaos at Coutts Border Blockade

In a recent trial at Coutts, Alberta, an RCMP officer testified about the chaos and confusion that ensued during a COVID-era border blockade two years ago. Sgt. Greg Tulloch took the stand and recounted the challenges of trying to communicate with the protesters who had caused a major disruption at the Canada-United States border.

The Allegations

Three men – Alex Van Herk, Marco Van Huigenbos, and Gerhard (George) Janzen – are facing charges of mischief over $5,000 in connection with the blockade. The Crown prosecutors are alleging that these men were the ringleaders of the protest, which lasted for two weeks and caused significant delays and inconvenience for travellers.

Difficulties in Communication

Sgt. Tulloch described the difficulties he and his fellow officers faced in trying to establish communication with the protesters. He recalled entering a meeting place known as the Saloon, where the protesters were gathered, and attempting to convey the message that the highway needed to be reopened. However, he found it challenging to identify anyone who was in charge or willing to take responsibility for the situation.

Leaders Emerged

As the days passed, Sgt. Tulloch encountered three individuals – Van Herk, Van Huigenbos, and Janzen – who seemed to emerge as leaders among the protesters. He noted that these men were not on his radar initially, but they quickly became prominent figures in the standoff. Janzen, in particular, was identified as someone who was speaking on behalf of the group and expressing their intentions to remain at the blockade site.

Assessing the Situation

Despite the challenges of communicating with the protesters, Sgt. Tulloch was able to gather impressions from Van Herk, Van Huigenbos, and Janzen about the progress of the blockade. These men provided insights into the motivations behind the protest and their determination to continue their demonstration.
