Safety Concerns at Angelina County Airport

In a recent long-range planning study conducted at the Angelina County Airport in Texas, two taxiways have been identified as safety concerns. These taxiways are designed to give planes a route to travel before takeoff, but their current layout poses a risk of potential plane collision.

County Commissioners Approve Project Resolution

To address this safety hazard, County Commissioners have approved a project resolution that will fix the issue, starting with phase one. Angelina County Airport Manager Gary Letney explains that the first phase involves moving one taxiway to the left, requiring planes to turn left and then right to access the runway. This change aims to reduce the risk of planes interfering with landing aircraft.

Phases of the Project

In phase two of the project, the taxiway will be extended to eliminate the need for pilots to perform a dangerous maneuver known as back taxiing. Currently, the layout of the taxiway forces pilots to taxi in the direction of landing planes, increasing the risk of accidents.

Funding and Collaboration

The total cost of the project is estimated to be around $1.675 million, with phase one costing $175,000 and phase two costing $1.5 million. The county will only have to cover $94,000 of the expenses, as the TXDOT Aviation Division will be contributing the remaining amount.

Letney highlights the collaboration between TXDOT and the FAA in addressing safety issues at the airport before proceeding with other projects. Last year, commissioners approved a 20-year airport master plan that includes runway expansion and addressing the taxiway concerns.

Next Steps

With the project resolution now approved, the airport can move forward with implementing the necessary changes. Letney states that the first phase will be completed this year, followed by the taxiway extension in the following year. The next step will involve soliciting bids from engineers and contractors to carry out the project.

As the airport prepares to enhance safety measures and improve operational efficiency, the community can look forward to a more secure and reliable aviation facility. Stay tuned for updates on the progress of this vital infrastructure project at Angelina County Airport.
