Details of the Arrest and Charges

Gant was apprehended during a routine traffic stop near his residence at 425 Henderson St. around 3 a.m. He was charged with committing a terroristic act and second-degree unlawful discharge of a firearm from a vehicle, both of which carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. Additionally, he faced two counts of first-degree endangering the welfare of a minor, punishable by up to six years each.

Additional Charges and Prior Record

Apart from the felony charges, Gant was also charged with misdemeanors including driving while intoxicated (first offense), driving on a suspended license, and several traffic violations. His bond was set at $102,500, and he remained in custody pending his appearance in Garland County District Court. While Gant had no prior felony convictions, he had previously been convicted of misdemeanors related to possession of a controlled substance and theft of property.

Sequence of Events Leading to the Arrest

The incident unfolded on Friday night when the Hot Springs police responded to reports of gunfire at a residence on Plateau Street. Witnesses described seeing a white Nissan Altima speeding past the house and firing shots before fleeing the scene. Subsequently, officers found shell casings matching a .40-caliber gun near the residence.

Subsequent Incidents and Arrest

The situation escalated when Gant returned to the same location in the early hours of Saturday, prompting another alert from the gunshot detection system. Officers located Gant’s vehicle and initiated a traffic stop, leading to his arrest. A search of his vehicle revealed incriminating evidence, including a .40-caliber Glock pistol and spent casings.

Concern for Children’s Safety

Of particular concern was the presence of Gant’s two young children, aged 6 and 7, inside the targeted residence during both shooting incidents. The gravity of the situation was further compounded by the discovery of a bullet hole in the front window of the house, underscoring the potential danger faced by the occupants.

Implications of Intoxication

During the arrest, officers noted signs of intoxication in Gant, including a strong smell of alcohol and impaired speech. Despite his claims of only having consumed two drinks earlier in the evening, he failed multiple field sobriety tests and was unable to provide a valid breath sample. Gant’s conflicting statements regarding the events raised further questions about his involvement in the shooting.

Denial and Disputed Claims

Despite the evidence against him, Gant maintained his innocence during questioning, denying any involvement in the shooting and attributing the shell casings to a previous visit to a gun range. He acknowledged driving past his ex-girlfriend’s house regularly but vehemently denied the allegations of firing shots at the residence.

In light of the grave charges against him and the potential risks posed to innocent bystanders, Gant’s case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of reckless behaviour and the importance of ensuring public safety..
