Perlis police are intensifying their efforts to ensure road safety during the festive season by targeting 11 hotspot locations that have been identified as accident-prone areas. The operation, known as Op Selamat 22 Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2024, will be in effect from today until April 13.

Collaborative Efforts for Safety
State police chief Datuk Muhammad Abdul Halim revealed that the focus locations include KM 7 Jalan Kangar-Alor Setar, KM10 Jalan Kangar-Padang Besar, KM1 Jalan Kangar-Arau, Jalan Raja Syed Alwi, and Jalan Kuala Perlis-Jerlun. A total of 127 members from the state Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) are working in collaboration with the Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department (JPKK) to ensure the success of the operation.
Crime Prevention in Residential Areas
In addition to focusing on road safety, the police are also prioritizing crime prevention in residential areas, particularly in homes where residents are away visiting their hometowns for Aidilfitri celebrations. This comprehensive approach aims to safeguard both the roads and residential areas during the festive period.
Positive Impact of Previous Operations
Reflecting on the success of previous operations, Muhammad highlighted that the traffic accident statistics in Perlis during last year’s Op Selamat period showed a significant decrease. The number of reported cases dropped from 84 in 2022 to 60 in 2023, indicating the effectiveness of the measures implemented during the festive season.
Reducing Fatal Crashes
Muhammad further revealed that there was a 60% decrease in fatal crashes, with the number of fatalities dropping from five cases in 2022 to two cases in 2023. This significant decrease underscores the importance of initiatives like Op Selamat in reducing the rate of accidents, particularly fatal ones, on the roads.
