The Incident

The body camera footage released by the City of Akron on Monday captured a shocking moment where an Akron police officer shot and struck a teenager in the hand. The incident occurred immediately after the officer arrived at the scene and saw the teen holding what was later determined to be a fake gun.

911 Call and Response

At approximately 7:04 p.m. on Monday, April 1, the City of Akron’s communications center received a 911 call from a concerned resident reporting a person with a gun near Newton Street and Tonawanda Avenue. The caller described the individual as aiming the gun at people’s houses, causing alarm in the neighbourhood.

The officer quickly responded to the call and located a person matching the description provided by the caller walking on Britain Road near the corner of Ottawa Avenue. As the officer approached the 15-year-old boy, he issued a verbal command for the teen to show his hands. In a tense moment, the officer then fired a shot at the teenager.

The Teen’s Pleas

The teenager immediately began yelling, “It’s fake! It’s fake!” as the officer radioed in, “Shots fired!” The officer then instructed the teen to get on the ground at gunpoint, leading to the boy complying and dropping to the ground while reiterating that the gun was not real.

The officer proceeded to handcuff the teen, and the body camera footage showed blood from the shooting wound. Additional officers arrived at the scene, removed the handcuffs, and began providing aid to the injured teenager by applying a tourniquet.

The Teen’s Background

As the officers tended to the boy’s wound, he informed them that he was on his way home from his cousin’s funeral. In a heartfelt moment, the teen expressed, “I’m a good kid, I get As in school, I play football. I just wanted to be safe. My cousin just died.” These details added a layer of complexity to the situation, shedding light on the personal circumstances of the teenager.

The 15-year-old was then transported to Akron Children’s Hospital for further treatment, where he received medical care for his injuries sustained during the incident.

Investigation and Accountability

The officer involved, a nine-year veteran of the department, has been placed on paid leave following the shooting. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) will conduct an investigation into the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the use of force.

Following the completion of the investigation, the case will be reviewed by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office before being submitted to the Summit County Grand Jury for evaluation. Additionally, an internal investigation will be conducted by the Office of Professional Standards and Accountability to ensure accountability within the police department.
