Major Car Theft Bust in Brampton

In a recent development, Peel police’s Commercial Auto Crime Bureau has made a significant breakthrough in a joint investigation with the Canada Border Services Agency. The operation led to the recovery of 20 vehicles valued at a whopping $1.8 million. Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the car theft ring that targeted high-end vehicles destined for overseas markets.

Investigation Unveiled

The probe kicked off in December 2023 when authorities zeroed in on a trucking park in Brampton. Further investigations led them to an industrial unit in Bolton, which was being used as a hub for loading stolen vehicles. These cars were earmarked for international ports, including those in Dubai, Oman, and Sohar. The investigators managed to recover several stolen high-end vans and other vehicles that were set to be shipped abroad.

Arrests and Charges

On March 26, a series of search warrants were executed, resulting in the apprehension of three suspects. Among them, Fouad Shakhtour, aged 62, from Toronto, faces charges including trafficking in stolen property, possession of property obtained by crime, possession of an automobile master key, and violation of a release order. Similarly, Ali Elfawair, aged 38, also from Toronto, faces charges related to trafficking in stolen property, possession of property obtained by crime, possession of an automobile master key, breach of a commitment, and breach of a release order. Both individuals were brought before the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton for a bail hearing.

Additional Suspect

Another individual, Harvir Boparai, aged 29 and hailing from Mississauga, has been charged with multiple counts of trafficking in stolen property and possession of property obtained by crime. Boparai is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton at a later date for further legal proceedings.
