Tragic Accident in Pattaya Claims Van Driver’s Life

A van driver tragically lost his life after falling asleep at the wheel and colliding with a highway truck on Thursday afternoon in Pattaya. The incident, which occurred around 1.30pm, was promptly reported to Bang Lamung police Station.

Location of the Incident

The accident took place on an overpass in the Nong Manao area of the Bang Lamung District in Chon Buri province. Police and rescue workers rushed to the scene, where they found a grey Toyota van severely damaged after crashing into a six-wheel truck.

Identification of the Deceased

Rescue workers discovered the lifeless body of the van driver, 39-year-old Suthiphon Ketmak, inside the vehicle. Suthiphon had suffered fatal injuries, including a broken neck and a damaged right eyebrow. It was evident that he had died on impact, as his body was found in the driver’s seat. Rescue workers had to use cutting equipment to extricate his body from the wreckage.

Account of the Truck Driver

The driver of the six-wheel truck, 30-year-old Sopon Chokprasopsert, was left in a state of shock following the collision. He explained to police that he was trailing a road sweeper on the overpass with his emergency lights on when the van crashed into the rear of his truck. Sopon immediately contacted the police to report the incident.

Police Investigation

Initial assessments by the police indicated that the van driver had fallen asleep at the wheel, leading to the fatal collision. The truck driver and other witnesses were taken to the police station for further questioning to determine the sequence of events.

Transportation of the Deceased

The body of Suthiphon Ketmak was transported to Bang Lamung Hospital, where it was handed over to his grieving relatives for religious ceremonies.

Related Incidents

In a separate incident on the same day, a road accident in Chachoengsao province claimed the lives of two people. A van carrying navy conscripts collided with an 18-wheeler when the driver reportedly fell asleep at the wheel. The van, hired by navy personnel returning home for the Songkran holiday break, veered off course and resulted in the tragic accident.
