A team from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) faced a harrowing ordeal in West Bengal early this morning as they conducted an investigation into a blast at the house of a Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader. The incident took place in East Midnapore, where officials were looking into a blast that occurred in 2022.

**Attack on NIA Team**

Reports suggest that the NIA team arrived in Bhupatinagar at around 5am and detained a man for questioning in connection with the blast case. However, as they were preparing to leave, they were met with hostility. Villagers demanded the release of the detained man, leading to a protest where stones were thrown and a vehicle’s windscreen was damaged.

In response to the incident, the NIA lodged a complaint with the local police. An Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from East Midnapore confirmed the receipt of the complaint and stated that they were in the process of verifying the details of the attack.

**Background of the Blast**

The blast that the NIA team was investigating took place on December 3, 2022, at the residence of TMC’s Bhupatinagar booth president, Rajkumar Manna. The explosion claimed the lives of three individuals, including Rajkumar Manna, Biswajit Gayen, and Buddhadeb Manna. Rajkumar and Buddhadeb were cousins, and the incident occurred at Rajkumar’s house.

**NIA’s Probe**

The NIA initiated a probe into the blast in June 2023 and had summoned eight TMC workers and local leaders for questioning. However, these individuals failed to appear for questioning on two occasions, prompting further investigation by the agency.

**Previous Incidents**

This is not the first time that investigating agencies have faced hostility in West Bengal. In January 5, a team from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) was attacked in Sandeshkhali, North 24 Parganas, while conducting a search at the residence of TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh in connection with a ration distribution scam.

**In Conclusion**

The attack on the NIA team highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in conducting investigations in sensitive cases. The safety of officials involved in such probes must be a top priority to ensure that justice is served and the truth is uncovered..
