A fresh political controversy has erupted in West Bengal following an attack on a vehicle carrying officials from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Bhupatinagar, East Midnapore district. The NIA officials were in the area to investigate a bomb blast case from 2022 that resulted in the tragic deaths of three individuals. The incident has sparked a heated debate, with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accusing the NIA team of instigating the attack on villagers, rather than being the victims themselves.

**Mamata Banerjee’s Allegations**

During an election rally in South Dinajpur district’s Balurghat, Mamata Banerjee claimed that the NIA officials had visited the homes of villagers in the early hours of the morning in connection with a minor incident involving the bursting of crackers in 2022. She vehemently denied that the attack on the NIA team was carried out by the women of Bhupatinagar, asserting that it was the NIA who had initiated the violence. Banerjee questioned the timing of the raid, asking why it was conducted at midnight without police permission. She accused the NIA of carrying out arrests just before the elections to support the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and called for global opposition against what she labeled as the BJP’s “dirty politics.”

The Trinamool Congress echoed Banerjee’s sentiments, denouncing the BJP government for allegedly using central agencies to manipulate the electoral process. The party called for an impartial Election Commission, accusing the BJP of attempting to influence the outcome of the elections through underhanded tactics. The central probe team had apprehended two individuals in connection with the bomb blast case before their vehicle was attacked on the way back to Kolkata.

**BJP’s Counterattack**

In response to the incident, BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya pointed fingers at Mamata Banerjee’s administration, alleging a culture of lawlessness in West Bengal. Malviya claimed that the attack on the NIA team was facilitated by the local police and accused the TMC of shielding criminals in the state. He highlighted the challenges faced by central agencies in carrying out their duties in the region, citing previous incidents involving attacks on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials.

**NIA Arrests Two Suspects**

The NIA successfully apprehended two individuals, Balai Charan Maity and Manobrata Jana, in connection with the bomb blast case that claimed three lives in December 2022. The agency conducted extensive searches at multiple locations, including the residence of one of the suspects. However, the NIA team encountered resistance from a crowd of local residents, resulting in minor injuries to a team member and damage to their official vehicle. The arrested individuals were accused of conspiring to manufacture and detonate crude bombs with the intent of spreading terror in the region.

In light of these developments, the situation in West Bengal remains tense, with political parties trading accusations and tensions running high. The clash between the NIA officials and villagers underscores the complex dynamics at play in the state’s political landscape, as parties vie for power and influence ahead of the upcoming elections..
