Tip-Off Leads to Discovery

The customs department had received a tip-off that precious metals like silver and gold were being smuggled into the country via flights from Bangkok, Thailand. Acting on this information, in March, officials seized a staggering 172 kg of jewellery and other items from two passengers at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai. Upon investigation, it was discovered that the seized items were actually made of silver, contradicting the fliers’ claims of them being imitation jewellery.

Accused Individuals and Their Roles

The two accused individuals, identified as Praveen Kumar Gupta (37) and Azar Khan (29), were apprehended while attempting to smuggle the silver items into India from Thailand via Thai Airways flight TG-351. During interrogation, both admitted to being fully aware of the presence of silver in the jewellery and confessed to smuggling it for a commission of Rs 12,000. Subsequently, a case was registered against them under the Customs Act, leading to their arrest.

Gupta, a resident of Kolkata who works in a coal mine in Chhattisgarh, allegedly smuggled 80 kg of silver, while Khan, an unemployed resident of Jhansi, managed to transport 90 kg of the precious metal, according to a reliable source.

Unveiling the Network

Further investigations into the matter have revealed that the accused individuals have disclosed the identities of their associates involved in the smuggling operation. The customs department is currently delving deeper into the network to uncover any additional culprits.
