The incident, which took place on the night of March 16 at the intersection of 37th Avenue South and Turner Street, resulted in the tragic death of 21-year-old Nicholas Simpson from Shallotte, North Carolina.

Details of the Incident

According to Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard, Simpson succumbed to his injuries at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center a few days after the crash. The North Myrtle Beach police responded to the scene to find Simpson, a motorcyclist, severely injured and bleeding profusely. The driver of the other vehicle involved, a Toyota Corolla, had fled the scene, sparking a search for the culprit.

Suspect Identified and Arrested

Authorities identified Selfido Raymundo Esquivel, a 33-year-old individual, as the suspect in the hit-and-run incident. Esquivel was accused of fleeing the scene of a fatal accident and failing to render aid to the injured motorcyclist. The investigation led to the discovery that the Toyota involved in the crash belonged to a man in North Carolina who had sold the vehicle to Esquivel on the day of the incident.

Arrest and Confession

Witnesses to the accident reported seeing Esquivel fleeing the scene and running towards a home on Turner Street. Police apprehended Esquivel at the residence, where he confessed to attempting to make a left turn onto Turner Street from 37th Avenue South when the speeding motorcycle collided with his car. Esquivel admitted to leaving the scene out of fear of being arrested and drove home without notifying his family.

Legal Proceedings

Attorney Jimmy Richardson confirmed that Esquivel, who is undocumented, was in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Georgia. Richardson stated that Esquivel would be returned to ICE custody once the legal proceedings related to the hit-and-run incident were concluded. Presently, Esquivel is detained at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center on a $75,000 bond.
