The Discovery

The remains of Karen Marie Heverly, aged 17, were discovered in a vineyard near Eighth Street and Rochester Avenue in Rancho Cucamonga on June 7, 1979, by a worker. At the time, the body appeared to be that of a white female, between 18 and 30 years old, with shoulder-length light brown hair and brown eyes. Despite extensive efforts, the victim remained unidentified, with no distinguishing marks or tattoos to provide clues.

The Investigation

Homicide investigators who responded to the scene found the victim lying face down in the dirt, wearing only dark brown shoes and light green socks. She had sustained stab wounds and showed signs of being struck with a blunt object. The case quickly went cold, with leads running dry and the victim’s identity remaining a mystery for decades.

Reopening the Case

In 2023, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Cold Case Homicide Team, in collaboration with the Coroner Division, decided to revisit the case in a bid to finally identify the victim. DNA samples collected from the victim were sent to Othram Inc., a company specializing in forensic DNA testing and identification. Through advanced forensic processing and genetic genealogy techniques, a comprehensive DNA profile was developed.

A Breakthrough in Forensic Technology

Scientists at Othram were able to use the DNA profile to conduct a genealogical search, leading to investigative leads that helped positively identify the victim as Karen Marie Heverly. Investigators revealed that Heverly had left her parents’ home at the age of 16 under unknown circumstances, adding a layer of mystery to the case.
