The Discovery

On April 8, 1992, the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office responded to a body that had washed up on the shore of Lake Ontario, near what is now the Novelis Plant. The remains were badly decomposed and mostly skeletal, making identification a challenging task. Despite efforts to compare the remains to missing persons, no matches were found at the time.

Renewed Efforts

Fast forward to April 2022, when the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office decided to renew efforts to identify the remains. Detective Constable Sara Mummery from the Niagara Regional police Service in Ontario, Canada was brought in to assist. After obtaining a new DNA sample from the remains and comparing it with cases in the U.S. and Canada, a breakthrough was finally made in February 2024.

The Identity Revealed

The new DNA sample was found to be a familial match to DNA collected from a family in Buffalo. Vincent C. Stack, who went missing in Niagara Falls State Park on or around Dec. 4, 1990, was the man whose remains had washed up on the shore of Lake Ontario. It was a poignant moment for his family, who had been searching for answers for over three decades.

A Tragic Journey

Vincent’s remains had traveled a long and harrowing journey after his disappearance. From Niagara Falls, his body would have traveled approximately 15 miles to the mouth of the St. Lawrence River, then over 130 miles across Lake Ontario before being discovered on the shore just outside the City of Oswego in 1992. It was a journey that spanned both time and distance, finally culminating in the closure his family had been seeking.
