In a tragic turn of events in Omaha, a young woman lost her life after being ejected from a vehicle during an attempted traffic stop by officers in the early hours of Wednesday morning. The woman, identified as 20-year-old Mali Miller, tragically passed away as a result of the incident.

Details of the Incident

The incident began when Omaha police received a 911 dispatch about a vehicle involved in a shots fired call in Council Bluffs that had fled from law enforcement. Officers located the vehicle, a white Nissan Titan, in north Omaha and began to follow it at a distance. The pursuit eventually led to the activation of lights near Interstate 480, where the driver of the Nissan lost control of the vehicle, resulting in a devastating crash.

During the crash, Mali Miller was ejected from the vehicle and officers immediately began lifesaving measures. Despite their efforts, Miller was rushed to the hospital with CPR in progress but sadly succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the truck, identified as 35-year-old David Kauai, was arrested for motor vehicle homicide and felony flight to avoid arrest. Fortunately, a 17-year-old passenger in the vehicle escaped uninjured.

Investigation and Legal Proceedings

The crash is currently under investigation by the department’s officer-involved investigations team as well as the Papillion Police Department. The entire incident was captured on cruiser dash camera footage, providing crucial evidence for the ongoing investigation.

Omaha police Lt. Neal Bonacci stated that it has not yet been determined if the officers involved will go on administrative leave. In accordance with state law, the case will be presented to a grand jury once the investigation is complete. State law mandates that a grand jury must be summoned when a death occurs while being apprehended or in custody by law enforcement.
