Canadian Aid Worker killed in Gaza Convoy
A Canadian man named Jacob Flickinger was tragically killed alongside six other aid workers in the Gaza Strip during an Israeli airstrike. Jacob, 33, was a military veteran from Quebec who leaves behind a partner and a one-year-old son. His father, John, shared on Facebook that Jacob’s death was a heartbreaking tragedy, but he passed away while doing what he loved.

Service to Humanity
Jacob Flickinger was a dual Canadian and U.S. citizen who had served in the Canadian Armed Forces as an infantryman in Quebec’s Royal 22e Regiment. He had been working with World Central Kitchen in Gaza since early March, delivering food aid to families in need. Last fall, he also travelled to Acapulco, Mexico, with the charity to provide food aid after Hurricane Otis hit the region.
Remembering Jacob
A Go Fund Me page has been set up to raise funds for Jacob Flickinger’s funeral and to create a trust fund for his young son. The community has already rallied together, raising over $14,000 by mid-afternoon on Wednesday. Jacob’s dedication to serving others through his work with World Central Kitchen has left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Tragic Loss of Lives
Joining Jacob in the convoy were six other aid workers who also lost their lives in the airstrike. Lalzawmi Frankcom from Australia, Damian Sobol from Poland, Saifeddin Issam Ayad Abutaha from Palestine, and three British military veterans – John Chapman, James Henderson, and James Kirby – were all part of the team providing aid to the people of Gaza.
Delivering Essential Aid
The convoy of World Central Kitchen vehicles had just finished delivering over 100 tonnes of food aid to the region when it was hit by the Israeli airstrike. The aid included rice, pasta, flour, legumes, canned vegetables, proteins, and a special shipment of dates provided by the United Arab Emirates to support Palestinians observing Ramadan.

Call for Investigation
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly have called for a full investigation into the tragic incident. Israel has stated that the targeting of the convoy was inadvertent, but there are growing demands for answers and accountability in the wake of the aid workers’ deaths.
A Plea for Peace
In an emotional essay published in the New York Times, World Central Kitchen founder José Andrés appealed to Israel to move towards peace. He emphasized that food should not be used as a weapon of war and urged for a change in policies that impact humanitarian aid efforts in conflict zones.
