WAKING up in a Berlin hospital on May 5, 2012, Miroslaw Wawak had no memory of the events that almost led to his demise the night before. Little did he know, he was the sole survivor of a serial killer who targeted gay men in the city’s underground clubs.

The mysterious “Darkroom Killer” had already claimed the lives of three men, poisoning them with a deadly dose of GHB, also known as “liquid ecstasy,” before robbing them. The police were left with few clues at the crime scenes, sparking a desperate search for the perpetrator.
Miroslaw’s harrowing experience triggered a nationwide manhunt for the elusive killer, whose chilling acts are now the focus of Netflix’s latest docuseries, Crime Scene Berlin: Nightlife Killer, set to premiere on April 3.
Lead investigator Monika Laschke described the case as one that made her feel like they were dealing with a monster. The heinous crimes took place in the backdrop of Berlin’s vibrant nightlife, fueled by liberal licensing laws that allowed clubs to operate round the clock, giving rise to a hedonistic techno scene.
The clubs also offered safe spaces known as “dark rooms” for anonymous sexual encounters, attracting members of the LGBTQ community. However, this permissive environment had a dark side, as evidenced by the string of murders that shook the city.

The first victim, a young man named Nicky Miller, was found dead in a sex club, Grosse Freiheit 114. His death was initially thought to be accidental, but subsequent investigations revealed signs of foul play. Another man, Alexander, was later discovered dead in his apartment under similar mysterious circumstances.
Miroslaw’s own brush with the killer began innocuously, with a chance encounter at a train station. The stranger he met offered him a drink laced with liquid ecstasy, leading to a near-fatal poisoning. Thanks to his survival, Miroslaw became a crucial link in the investigation, helping the police identify the killer.
Through painstaking detective work, including tracing credit card transactions and analysing CCTV footage, the police were able to unmask the suspect responsible for the murders. The breakthrough came when bar staff at Grosse Freiheit 114 recognised the man from the footage, leading to his eventual arrest.
The suspect initially denied involvement, claiming he had merely found a phone outside the club. However, as the evidence mounted against him, he eventually confessed to his crimes. Although it remains unclear if he was the same individual who targeted Miroslaw, his arrest brought a sense of closure to the case.
