Details of the Incident

Trooper Bockhold and the deputies were responding to a call about a Dodge Charger pulled over on the side of U.S. 36 near Superior. Upon approaching the vehicle, they noticed a bullet hole in the window and called for backup. The driver, later identified as Efrain Inda, was found inside the vehicle and allegedly refused to comply with commands to show his hands.

Escalation of the Situation

Inda, who was believed to be armed with a firearm, eventually exited the vehicle with a handgun in his hand. Despite repeated demands to drop the weapon, he placed it on the car’s trunk. The deputies attempted to communicate with Inda in Spanish, but he reportedly yelled “shoot me” and reached for the handgun.

Use of Force

When Inda reached for his handgun, the officers fired less lethal rounds at him. However, he did not react and instead grabbed his gun, pointing it at the officers. In response, the officers fired lethal shots at Inda, who allegedly fired back. Tragically, Inda was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigation Findings

Following an investigation by the Boulder County Investigation Team, it was discovered that Inda had an empty bottle of tequila and a Ruger 9mm EC9S handgun near his body. The gun’s serial number had been scratched off, and the bullet hole in the car’s window was determined to have come from inside the vehicle.
