Caitlin Bunger Identified as Deceased Woman Found in Russian River
The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office has recently revealed the identity of the deceased woman discovered in the Russian River near Ukiah last month. The body found by a man swimming in the river south of Ukiah on March 24 has been identified as Caitlin Bunger, a 37-year-old woman who had recently relocated to California. Bunger, who had been reported missing twice since October, was living in Ukiah without a permanent address.

Investigation into Bunger’s Death
Following an autopsy conducted on March 27, the MCSO conducted research on recent missing person cases and determined that Bunger matched the physical characteristics of the deceased individual. Medical records were then examined, confirming the woman’s identity. Bunger had moved to California approximately five to six months before the investigation and had been reported missing to the MCSO in both October 2023 and March 2024. It was reported that she was homeless and frequented the Perkins Street Bridge area.
MCSO’s Ongoing Investigation
The MCSO is currently investigating the cause and manner of Bunger’s death and is urging anyone with information to come forward. Those with relevant details can contact the MCSO at 707-463-4086. Bunger was the second deceased individual found in the Russian River near Ukiah last month, following the discovery of a man’s body near Norgard Lane on March 1.

The man pulled from the river near Norgard Lane on March 1 was identified as Joshua Scott Freeman, a lifelong Mendocino County resident. His body showed no obvious signs of foul play, and the cause of death is still pending final autopsy results. Toxicology reports, which typically take several weeks to be received, are expected to provide more insight into Freeman’s passing, with a conclusion not anticipated until June.
Personal Connection to the Tragedy
Zeke Baker of Santa Rosa, the individual who reported finding Bunger’s body, revealed that Freeman was his cousin-in-law. Baker had been in the river between Talmage and Hopland that day, engaging in a tribute to his family member through swimming and bodyboarding. He recounted a private ceremony he had performed at the site of recovery shortly before discovering Bunger downstream. Despite the harrowing experience, Baker expressed gratitude for the recovery of the deceased woman.
