In a devastating turn of events, a Somerset Township man has been charged with vehicular homicide following a crash that claimed the lives of two individuals last year. State police reported that 22-year-old Braxton Judy was driving his Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck at speeds exceeding 90 mph when it collided head-on with a Chevrolet Sonic sedan on South Edgewood Avenue in Somerset Township on Aug. 12.

Victims Remembered

The collision resulted in the tragic deaths of 20-year-old Rachel Maldonado and a 17-year-old identified as “T.M.” in court records. “T.M.” was later revealed to be Talan Marva, a promising young student at Somerset Area High School who had plans to join the U.S. Marines. According to his father, Justin Marva, Talan had a bright future ahead of him and was looking forward to moving in with Maldonado, his girlfriend, before the accident changed everything.

State Trooper David Waldschmidt noted the severity of the crash, with the Sonic’s engine block being pushed into the passenger compartment upon impact. Despite initial concerns of alcohol involvement due to the presence of shattered glass bottles and the scent of alcohol at the scene, Judy’s blood alcohol level was found to be well below the legal limit for DUI.

Investigation and Charges

An accident reconstruction team meticulously examined the evidence at the scene, determining that Judy was speeding over 30 mph above the posted limit at the time of the crash. Although he attempted to brake seconds before impact, he was unable to safely negotiate the curve, resulting in the tragic collision.

Judy now faces two felony counts of vehicular homicide and aggravated assault by vehicle, one for each victim, as well as additional misdemeanor charges related to the incident. After being arraigned before District Judge Scott Walker, he was granted a $100,000 unsecured bond pending a preliminary hearing on April 16.

Talan, a dedicated student and athlete, had dreams of serving his country alongside his brother Aiden in the U.S. Marine Corps. Maldonado, a Texas native who had recently relocated to Somerset, was remembered as a kind and hardworking individual by those who knew her.

As the community mourns the loss of these two young lives, Justin Marva fondly recalls the positive impact his son and Maldonado had on those around them. The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of reckless driving and the importance of road safety for all.
