Canton police Chief Helena Rafferty Issues Statement After Accidental Pedestrian Collision

CANTON, Mass. — Canton Police Chief Helena Rafferty has finally broken her silence more than a month after being involved in an incident where she struck a pedestrian with a town-owned vehicle in Wrentham. Rafferty, who was cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, issued a statement on Monday detailing the events of the accident.
Accidental Collision in Wrentham
Chief Rafferty recounted that on February 16, she was driving home in her official SUV when she accidentally struck a Wrentham resident. She explained that she was turning left from South Street onto Creek Street when she noticed the pedestrian’s reflective vest. Despite applying her brakes immediately, her vehicle made contact with the individual, knocking them to the ground. Rafferty acted swiftly by exiting her vehicle to render first aid and calling 911.
Breathalyzer Test Results
Following the incident, Rafferty requested a breathalyzer test for herself, which returned a reading of 0.00. The Wrentham police incident report confirmed that Rafferty was issued a civil citation that night for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, a fine which she has since paid.
Pedestrian Suffers Injuries
The pedestrian, identified as Michael Barry, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment after sustaining a laceration to the right side of his head and complaining of left knee pain. His current condition remains unknown.

Witness Account
A witness to the crash, Roma Pritza, provided a statement to the police affirming that Rafferty was not driving erratically before the collision. Pritza described seeing the reflective vest fall to the ground and witnessing the immediate response from Rafferty and other bystanders.

While Rafferty informed Canton town officials about the incident, she expressed regret for not informing the public sooner. In her statement, she acknowledged the attention the incident had garnered and admitted that she should have issued a statement earlier.
