Jalpaiguri District Hit by Fatal Storm

A sudden storm wreaked havoc in parts of Jalpaiguri district in northern West Bengal, resulting in the tragic deaths of four people and injuries to over 100 individuals. The storm, accompanied by strong winds and hail, caused extensive damage to hutments, houses, trees, and electric poles in the district headquarters town and neighbouring areas like Rajarhat, Barnish, Bakali, Jorpakdi, Madhabdanga, and Saptibari.

Condolences and Relief Efforts

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences for the lives lost in the storm and assured proper assistance to those affected. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee cancelled her scheduled programmes to visit the victims’ families and oversee relief efforts. Governor C V Ananda Bose also planned a visit to the affected areas to assess the situation and provide support.

The deceased individuals were identified as Dijendra Narayan Sarkar (52), Anima Burman (45), Jagen Roy (72), and Samar Roy (64). Many pedestrians were injured by hail during the storm, leading to a deployment of the disaster response team and the setup of helpdesks to aid the injured.

Banerjee mentioned that civil administration, police, and disaster management personnel have been deployed for relief work in Jalpaiguri.
