The accident, which occurred around 1:30 p.m., resulted in the closure of the road between Tekapo and Twizel. The road was later reopened, only to witness another three-vehicle crash less than two hours after the initial incident.

Two of the individuals killed in the accident were identified as Malaysian students studying at the University of Canterbury. The New Zealand International Students Association expressed their condolences and grief over the devastating loss of the students.
