The investigation into Daisy Shelton’s murder began in June of 1964 when a fisherman discovered a severed human arm in a gravel pit east of Tipp City. Just four days later, another fisherman found a burlap bag in a canal channel containing a dismembered human torso. Subsequent searches revealed a head and leg in the canal. The remains were later identified as those of 43-year-old Daisy Evelyn Shelton of Dayton.
A Cold Case Reopened
Despite the initial identification of the victim, the case went cold until 2017 when a witness, fearing he was dying in a hospital, confessed to a nurse that he had seen someone kill Shelton. He described witnessing her being struck in the head with a hammer at a Dayton home, where her body was dismembered and disposed of in bodies of water in and around Tipp City.
An Unlikely Suspect
The person named as a suspect in Shelton’s murder initially denied knowing her, despite living on the same street and working for the same employer. However, in August 2017, he reluctantly admitted to having known the victim. He claimed that a box from his house was used to transport her remains and suggested that she may have been killed at his home. He maintained that he was being set up by the eyewitness of the crime.
A Tragic Conclusion
The witness who testified before a grand jury passed away before the case could be prosecuted. The suspect, who was 92 years old at the time of his death in 2022, never faced trial for the murder of Daisy Shelton. The closure of this cold case brings some sense of justice to the victim’s family, even though it comes decades after the crime occurred.
