Daisy Shelton Homicide Case Closed After 58 Years
After 58 years, the Miami County Prosecutor’s Office has approved the closing of the Daisy Shelton homicide case, which occurred in 1964. The case remained unsolved for decades until new evidence came to light, leading to the identification of the suspect.

The Gruesome Discovery
In June of 1964, a fisherman made a chilling discovery when he pulled a severed human arm from a gravel pit east of Tipp City on state Route 571. This grim finding set off a search for the rest of the victim’s remains. Four days later, another fisherman found a burlap bag in a channel of the old Miami Erie canal, containing a dismembered human torso. Subsequently, a head and a leg were found in the canal, piecing together the puzzle of a brutal crime.
The Victim: Daisy Evelyn Shelton
The remains were identified as belonging to 43-year-old Daisy Evelyn Shelton, hailing from Dayton. Her tragic fate remained a mystery for over five decades until a key witness came forward with crucial information in 2017.
A Witness Comes Forward
The breakthrough in the case came when a witness, fearing he was on his deathbed, made a confession to a nurse while in the hospital. Despite his dire condition, the witness survived and was later interviewed by detectives. He recounted the harrowing events of 1964, where he witnessed an individual striking Daisy Shelton in the head with a hammer at a home in Dayton. The witness detailed how Shelton was dismembered in the same house, and her body parts were disposed of in bodies of water in and around Tipp City.
The Suspect’s Admission
The suspect, who was identified by the witness, cooperated with detectives and consented to multiple interviews. Initially denying any involvement, the suspect eventually admitted to knowing Daisy Shelton and acknowledged the use of a box from his home to transport her body parts. He confessed that it was possible Shelton was killed in his residence, implicating himself in the heinous crime.

Closure and Justice
Although the eyewitness to the murder gave testimony to a grand jury, he passed away before the case could be prosecuted. Similarly, the suspect died in September 2022, closing the chapter on this long-standing cold case. The Miami County Sheriff’s Office expressed their dedication to pursuing all open cases, providing closure to victims’ families and the community.
