The Identification

Authorities were able to identify the remains as belonging to 43-year-old Daisy Evelyn Shelton of Dayton. The case initially went cold, leaving a cloud of mystery hanging over the community. It wasn’t until 2017 that a breakthrough occurred.

The Breakthrough

In a surprising turn of events, a witness who believed he was on his deathbed in a hospital confessed to a nurse. He claimed to have witnessed Shelton’s murder, stating that he saw someone strike her in the head with a hammer at a Dayton home. According to his account, her body was dismembered and disposed of in various bodies of water in and around Tipp City.

The Suspect

The person implicated as the suspect initially denied knowing Shelton, despite living on the same street and working for the same employer. However, in August 2017, he reluctantly admitted to knowing the victim. He confessed that a box from his house was used to transport Shelton’s remains and suggested she may have been killed at his home. He claimed it was all a setup orchestrated by the witness of the crime.

Legal Proceedings and Tragic Endings

The witness testified before a grand jury, but tragically passed away before the case could be prosecuted. The suspect, who was 92 years old at the time, also passed away in September 2022. The county sheriff’s office highlighted the challenges of cold-case homicides, emphasizing the importance of revisiting cases to bring closure to the victim’s family.
