Governor Gavin Newsom’s office announced rewards for two unsolved murders in Southern California on Friday. The victims, Victoria Barrios, 18, and Alan Schwalbe, 61, were tragically killed in separate incidents in Santa Ana and Costa Mesa, respectively.

Victoria Barrios was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting on the 500 block of East Pine Street in Santa Ana on Aug. 30, 2019. Despite not being a gang member, Barrios was caught in the crossfire and tragically lost her life. Surveillance footage captured the shooter firing from a red Chevrolet SUV, leading investigators to believe the shooting was gang-related. A $50,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the suspect’s arrest and conviction. In another unsolved case, Alan Schwalbe was found stabbed to death in his home on the 300 block of 22nd Street in Costa Mesa on Aug. 11, 1993. Despite years of investigation, no leads were obtained in this cold case. Authorities are re-submitting evidence for forensic testing in the hopes of uncovering new leads. Investigator Bob Taft, who specializes in cold cases, emphasized the importance of new technologies in solving cases like Schwalbe’s. A $50,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction in Schwalbe’s murder.
