Investigation into Fatal Shooting in Kingston

Following a tragic incident in Kingston, the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) is diligently working to reconstruct the crime scene where a female passenger was fatally shot. The incident, which occurred during a reported robbery on Lexington Avenue, resulted in the death of 34-year-old Terryesha Maragh. INDECOM is now focusing on piecing together evidence from the postmortem findings to determine the source of the fatal bullet that struck Maragh.

INDECOM’s Probe

INDECOM’s investigation has revealed that between March 26 and 28, there were four separate incidents across four parishes that resulted in fatal shootings. Hugh Faulkner, speaking to The Gleaner, mentioned that early reports suggest an exchange of gunfire during the incident involving Maragh. The exact cause of her injury and subsequent death is yet to be established, as postmortem findings are still pending.

Scene Reconstruction and Forensic Processes

Faulkner emphasized the importance of scene reconstruction in determining the source of the fatal shot. He mentioned that reconstructive forensic processes can be instrumental in identifying the individuals involved in the incident. INDECOM aims to gather all available evidence to provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding Maragh’s death.

Off-Duty police Officer Intervention

Reports indicate that an off-duty police officer intervened in the robbery of a female pedestrian on Lexington Avenue. During the intervention, the officer fired his weapon at the fleeing robbers, inadvertently injuring Maragh, who was a passenger in a passing vehicle. Despite efforts to save her, Maragh succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.

INDECOM’s Efforts

INDECOM has processed the vehicle in which Maragh was traveling, noting bullet damage. The officer involved has provided an initial account of the incident and has been requested to provide a formal statement to the commission. This incident, along with three others in March, has raised the total number of fatal shootings to 12 for the month and 34 for the year.

Other Fatal Incidents

INDECOM also responded to fatal shootings in Yallahs, St Thomas; Manchester; and Guy’s Hill, St Catherine. Each incident involved unique circumstances that led to fatal outcomes. The commission is urging any witnesses to come forward and provide additional information to aid in their investigations.
