Tragic Gas Cylinder Explosion in Gazipur Claims Seventeen Lives
In a devastating turn of events, the death toll in the Gazipur gas cylinder explosion tragedy has risen to seventeen, with another victim succumbing to his burn injuries at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (SHNIBPS) in the early hours of Saturday.

The latest victim, identified as Kuddus Khan, hailing from Kaliganj upazila in Lalmonihat, tragically lost his life to the horrific incident. Kuddus, who resided in Kaliakair upazila in Gazipur, suffered severe burns amounting to 80 per cent of his body, ultimately passing away at around 4:30 am while receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit of the burn unit.
Victims of the Tragedy
The list of victims who have lost their lives in this tragic incident continues to grow. Among those who perished at the burn unit are Solayman Mollah, Monsur Ali, Taiba, Ariful Islam, Mohidul, Nargis Khatun, Jahirul Islam, Motaleb, Solayman, Rabbi, Tawhid, Yeasin Arafat, Moshiur Rahman, Kamala Khatun, Nadim, Lalon, and now Kuddus Khan.
Chronology of Events
The catastrophic explosion occurred on March 13 at Telirchala area in Kaliakair upazila of Gazipur, leaving at least 35 individuals, including women and children, injured. The majority of the victims, totaling thirty-two, were rushed to the SHNIBPS in critical condition for urgent medical care.
According to accounts from locals, the source of the tragedy stemmed from a leaking cooking gas cylinder at a residence belonging to a man named Shafik Khan in the area. In an attempt to mitigate the danger, Khan removed the cylinder from his home and discarded it onto the road, inadvertently triggering a massive explosion that resulted in the loss of multiple lives.
