In a devastating turn of events, the death toll from the recent gas cylinder blast in Gazipur’s Kaliakair upazila has risen to 17. The latest victim, identified as Kuddus Khan, tragically passed away early Saturday at the age of 45. Kuddus, who suffered severe burns covering 80 percent of his body, succumbed to his injuries at 4 am at the ICU of Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

Continuing Recovery Efforts
The hospital staff reported that there are currently seven to eight more burn victims receiving treatment at the facility, with their conditions being described as critical. The incident, which occurred on March 13, left a total of 35 individuals, including women and children, with burn injuries of varying degrees.
The Horrific Explosion
According to local accounts, the tragedy unfolded when a gas cylinder at a residence in Telir Chala area of Mouchak, Kaliakair, caught fire due to a leak. The incident took place around 6 pm, just before iftar during the second day of Ramadan. As the residents attempted to dispose of the cylinder, a sudden explosion rocked the area, causing chaos and panic among bystanders and passers-by.

The bustling road where the explosion occurred was filled with people from all walks of life, leading to several innocent individuals sustaining injuries in the blast. The aftermath of the incident left one patient with 100 percent burns, three with 95 percent burns, and 16 with burns exceeding 50 percent.
