Initial Arrest Reports and Traffic Citations

Initial arrest reports indicated that Thompson was also charged with three misdemeanor traffic citations on the day of the incident: reckless driving, driving under the influence, and failure to wear a seat belt. However, the citation did not specify the substance Thompson was under the influence of. Court records show that Thompson has been in police custody at the Cullman County Detention Center since March 12.

School Resource Officer Files Complaint

Parkside School Resource Officer Patrick Bishop filed a complaint for the remaining charges two weeks after the incident occurred. The Cullman County Sheriff’s Office Communications Deputy Chad Whaley confirmed that Thompson has been in custody since March 12, with the misdemeanor cases being assigned to Judge Rusty Turner on March 26.

Incident Details at Parkside Elementary

The incident at Parkside Elementary School began when Thompson attempted to pick up two siblings, who were not on the pre-approved pick up list. It was later revealed that the children’s mother had sent Thompson, but had failed to inform the school. Principal Caleb Elrod explained that Thompson became agitated when questioned by Officer Bishop and tried to resist arrest multiple times while being kicked on the legs.

Lockdown Situation and Fleeing the Scene

The incident unfolded during the dismissal of students, prompting the school to go into lockdown. Bishop managed to place Thompson under arrest, but he broke away and fled into the school’s gymnasium before speeding away in his vehicle. Thompson entered the gym through a back door and quickly exited, with no students believed to be in danger during the chaotic events.
