The woman, later identified as a 24-year-old citizen of Guatemala, found herself stuck on the fence, desperately seeking a way to cross into the United States. The arrival of emergency medical services was swift, but it was already too late. The woman was declared deceased by a physician from Scripps Mercy Hospital after an assessment by the fire department personnel.

The Customs and Border Protection’s Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) also initiated a review of the events leading to the woman’s death.
