In a heartwarming turn of events, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency has announced that a Virginia man who was killed in World War II has finally been identified. David Walker, a 19-year-old who was assigned to the battleship USS California during the attack on Pearl Harbor, has been officially accounted for after decades of being listed as “Unknown.”

Walker was one of 103 crewmen who tragically lost their lives when the USS California was torpedoed during the infamous attack on Pearl Harbor. His remains, along with those of his fallen comrades, were recovered by U.S. Navy personnel and interred in Hawaii cemeteries, including the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. However, it wasn’t until 2018 that the 25 men who were buried as “Unknowns” were exhumed for further analysis.

The remains underwent thorough anthropological and dental analysis by the DPAA, as well as mitochondrial DNA analysis by the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System, in order to positively identify David Walker. Now that Walker has been identified, a rosette will be placed next to his name on the Walls of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. He will be laid to rest with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery in September, bringing closure to his surviving relatives and honoring his sacrifice for his country.

According to Walker’s personnel file, he hailed from Norfolk, Virginia, though there is no information available about his surviving relatives or when he entered the U.S. Navy. Reports indicate that Walker enlisted in the Navy about a year before his untimely death, leaving high school early to serve his country. It’s a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by so many young men and women during times of conflict.

The emotional impact of losing a loved one in such a tragic event is something that resonates with families of fallen soldiers to this day.

The identification of David Walker serves as a poignant reminder of the dedication and commitment shown by military labs in their tireless efforts to bring closure to families of fallen soldiers. The meticulous analysis and DNA testing conducted by the DPAA and the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System have made it possible to finally lay to rest those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

As we honour the memory of David Walker and the countless others who gave their lives in service to their country, we are reminded of the importance of never forgetting the sacrifices made by these brave men and women.
