Investigation into Box Elder Shooting Deaths

Law enforcement agencies are currently investigating the shooting deaths of two men that occurred in Box Elder on Thursday, March 28, 2024. The incident took place in the parking lot of D&L Bar around 1:30 a.m. Hill County Sheriff Jamie Ross stated that deputies responded to reports of shots fired and discovered two men had been shot at the gas pumps.

Victims Identified

The two victims have been identified as Darin Bernard Caplette, aged 41, and Thomas Roderick Yallup, aged 42. Both men were residents of the Rocky Boy Reservation. They were taken to a medical facility in private vehicles, with one vehicle meeting an ambulance in Laredo and the other being assisted by Tribal police before being transferred to an ambulance.

Targeted Assault

Sheriff Ross mentioned that initial information suggests the shooting was a targeted assault directed at these two men. There is currently no evidence to indicate a risk to the public, but a significant law enforcement presence is expected in the Box Elder area as multiple crime scenes need processing and witnesses need to be interviewed.

Assistance from Other Agencies

Deputies from the Chouteau County Sheriff’s Office, along with officers from various other agencies, have been aiding in the investigation. The Montana Department of Transportation has reported a section of US Highway 87 near Box Elder being blocked for a half-mile due to a law enforcement incident in all lanes, causing delays for drivers in the area.

Autopsy and Call for Information

The bodies of the victims will be sent to the Montana State Crime Lab for autopsy. Anyone with information regarding the shootings is urged to contact the authorities at 406-265-2512.
