Fort McMurray-Lac La Biche MLA and Alberta’s Energy Minister, Brian Jean, recently spoke out about the conclusion of a five-year RCMP investigation into the 2017 Alberta UCP leadership race. Party Strengthened Despite Investigation

Despite being a central figure in the 2017 leadership race and having previously supported the investigation into voter fraud, Jean believes that the whole issue has actually strengthened the United Conservative Party. He stated that the true “victim” in this matter was the party itself, which was formed through the efforts and sacrifices of many individuals.

Following his loss to Kenney in the 2017 leadership race, an investigation was initiated by the Alberta Elections Commissioner based on anonymous complaints. While the investigation did not yield concrete evidence from the past, Jean noted that it led to significant improvements in the party’s processes for future leadership races.

Positive Changes Moving Forward

Reflecting on the 2022 UCP leadership race where he competed against Danielle Smith, Jean highlighted the enhancements made to safeguard the rights of party members and ensure fairness and transparency. He commended the party for prioritizing integrity in political processes and running a successful leadership race.

Details from the RCMP Report

The recently released RCMP report on the investigation revealed extensive details about the probe. With a team of 65 investigators conducting over 1,700 interviews and examining numerous documents and emails, the investigation cost taxpayers nearly half a million dollars. While some irregularities were identified, they were deemed insufficient to impact the outcome of the 2017 leadership race.

Despite the findings of the investigation, Jean chose not to share his personal sentiments on the outcome when approached by local news outlets.

Overall, Brian Jean’s response to the closure of the RCMP investigation demonstrates his commitment to transparency and integrity within the United Conservative Party. As Alberta’s Energy Minister, Jean continues to focus on serving the interests of Albertans and leading with dedication and honesty.
