Afghanistan Blamed for Terrorist Incidents

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has once again pointed fingers at Afghanistan for not taking sufficient action to eliminate terrorism, leading to a rise in terrorist attacks in Pakistan. He emphasised the urgent need for stricter border controls to tackle the threat posed by terrorists operating from across the border.

String of Recent Attacks

The Minister’s remarks come in the wake of a series of recent attacks, including assaults on the Gwadar Port Authority complex, a naval base in Turbat, and a devastating suicide attack on a van carrying Chinese workers in Shangla. These incidents have raised concerns about the increasing security challenges faced by Pakistan.

Call for Regional Cooperation

During a special security meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, concerns were raised about the presence of terrorist sanctuaries across the borders. The meeting highlighted the need for a regional approach to counter terrorism effectively and prevent further attacks on Pakistani soil.

Challenges of Border Security

Minister Asif highlighted the unique challenges posed by the Pak-Afghan border, calling for the enforcement of international laws and traditions to curb the flow of terrorists. He stressed the importance of building strong relations between the two countries based on mutual respect and cooperation in managing cross-border movements.

Changes in Border Regulations

In a bid to enhance border security, Pakistan recently implemented a policy requiring all Afghan citizens to possess a valid passport and visa for entry. This shift towards a “one document regime” marks a significant departure from previous practices and aims to tighten control over cross-border movements.

Uncertainty Over New Measures

Despite the Minister’s calls for enhanced border controls, it remains unclear what specific measures will be implemented to address the security challenges along the Pak-Afghan border. The government is facing pressure to take decisive action to prevent further terrorist incidents and protect the country’s security and stability.

As the situation continues to evolve, the need for regional cooperation and effective counter-terrorism strategies becomes increasingly critical. The government must work towards establishing robust security measures and strengthening diplomatic relations with neighbouring countries to combat the growing threat of terrorism..
