Officer Involved Shooting After Crash in Prince George’s County
A tragic incident unfolded on Wednesday evening in Prince George’s County, Maryland, as a D.C. police officer shot and killed a man following a crash on Crain Highway. The incident occurred at the intersection of Crain Highway and Village Drive, where a driver involved in the crash fled the scene on foot.

Off-Duty D.C. Police Lieutenant’s Encounter
Shortly before 6 p.m., an off-duty D.C. police lieutenant, identified as Lt. Daren Jones, was in a marked police cruiser when he spotted a pedestrian, later identified as 28-year-old Ian Tilton from Annapolis, on the road. Concerned about the situation, Lt. Jones called for assistance, and a Prince George’s County officer promptly arrived at the scene to provide support.
Confrontation with the Police Officer
According to Maryland State Police, Tilton allegedly brandished a knife and lunged at the Prince George’s County police officer. In an attempt to subdue him, the officer deployed a Taser, but it proved ineffective. During the ensuing struggle, Lt. Jones made the difficult decision to discharge his agency-issued firearm, resulting in Tilton being critically wounded. Tragically, Tilton succumbed to his injuries after being transported to the hospital.
Investigation and Closure of Crain Highway
While authorities suspect a connection between the initial crash and the subsequent police shooting, they have not confirmed whether Tilton was the driver who fled the scene. Thankfully, no officers sustained injuries during the chaotic events. The scene was swarmed with numerous police vehicles, leading to the closure of all northbound lanes on Crain Highway between Queen Anne Road and Trade Zone Avenue for investigative purposes.
