Baltimore has been plunged into mourning as the recovery mode in the aftermath of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse has transitioned into a salvage operation. The devastating incident earlier this week has claimed the lives of two workers, with four others still missing and presumed dead as crews continue the search in the Patapsco River.

The bodies of 35-year-old Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes and 26-year-old Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera were recovered from a submerged red pickup truck, bringing a sense of closure to their families. Among the missing are Miguel Luna from El Salvador and Maynor Yassir Suazo Sandoval from Honduras, both fathers leaving behind young children.

As the investigation progresses, divers are faced with the challenge of navigating through an “abundance of twisted metal and debris” from the collapsed Key Bridge, hindering search efforts. The Department of Homeland Security reports that a truck and trailer have been retrieved from the water, while a vehicle remains suspended from the wreckage of the bridge.

Concerns have been raised about the cargo ship involved in the collision carrying hazardous materials, with 13 damaged containers being inspected for any potential threats. The U.S. Coast Guard has confirmed that the vessel was loaded with 56 containers of hazardous materials, including corrosives, flammables, and lithium-ion batteries. However, there is no immediate risk to the public, as the two containers that fell into the water were not carrying hazardous materials.

The impact of the bridge collapse has prompted a White House briefing, where U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg acknowledged that the rebuilding process will be a lengthy and costly endeavour. While the exact cost of reconstruction remains unknown, Buttigieg emphasized that safety and thoroughness will be prioritized in the restoration efforts.

National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy revealed that the cargo ship, chartered by Maersk, had a history of deficiencies, including a recent issue related to propulsion and auxiliary machinery. The NTSB is investigating the possibility of a power failure as a contributing factor to the tragic collision, with data recorders providing limited information due to background noise.

The recovery and salvage operation continues as authorities work tirelessly to retrieve the remaining missing workers and secure the hazardous containers onboard the cargo ship. The Baltimore community mourns the loss of lives and awaits answers regarding the circumstances that led to this devastating incident.
